About the topic

Extreme heat impacts the health and wellbeing of the community, the environment, and economic performance. The accumulation of heat in urban areas can result in urban heat islands, which experience temperatures higher than the surrounding landscape. Under climate change, the impact of higher temperatures will become more evident in these areas.

This webinar discusses proven strategies for local government to successfully manage the urban heat island effect including maintaining or increasing greenspace and tree cover, shading covered surfaces such as major and minor roads, maximising irrigation, and using lighter coloured materials to maximise cooling effects.  

About Dr. Mark Siebentritt

Mark’s career spans nearly twenty years with public and private sector experience in planning, engagement, climate change, water and natural resource management. He has ten years’ experience in consultancy, including the past 6 years as co-director of Seed Consulting Services Pty Ltd.  

Prior to this he was CEO of the Waterfind Environment Fund and also worked in a number of positions at the Murray-Darling Basin Commission. His current focus is on how to bring rigorous technical information to bear on complex decision making in a way that builds on local community and industry knowledge.

He has delivered over 60 climate change projects in the last 4 years, including climate change strategies and risk assessments. Mark is also actively working with local governments to better understand their urban forests, where heat islands occur and how to develop urban cooling strategies.
